2020 Beer Olympics Summary

Beer Olympics flashed by and we have two first-time champions. Chad secured the gold with one event to go but Mexico made a last-minute move to nab the silver. Canada issued the most improved performance of the event, securing an overall bronze medal. Here is the evaluation of each team:

Chad (Berry/Sheets) – GOLD – 13 points (4G, 1B)

What Went Right

The bracketed events were dominated by the Chadians, who finished the scheduled games 10-2 and received a bye in all but one event. More importantly, they were able to cash in those byes and turn them into gold medals, 4 to be exact. Berry becomes the first rookie to take home the top prize since 2017 (M. LePage). Sheets is now the reigning Beer Olympics Social MVP and Beer Olympics Gold Medalist.

What Went Wrong

After a perfect game in a beer pong scheduled game, Chad stumbled in the quarterfinals and wasted an opportunity. They only came up with one point, a bronze in straw chug, in the non-bracketed events.

Mexico (Perez/Tillman) – SILVER – 9 points (2G, 1S, 1B)

What Went Right

Mexico sat in 6th place with two events to go but grabbed 5 additional points and moved all the way up to the overall silver medal. Showing there is no one way to do it, the Mexicans rode gold medals in two non-bracketed events, quarters and obstacle course. Greg Tillman has finished silver, gold, silver the last 3 years.

What Went Wrong

A cold spell from Friday night to Saturday morning, where they won only one bracket game and failed to reach the semis in bounce run, beer pong, and snappa, left Mexico looking temporarily like pretenders. Chad eliminated Mexico from 3 of the 6 bracketed events.

Canada (Ernst/Symington) – BRONZE – 8 points (2G, 1S)

What Went Right

Out of nowhere, the Canadians rose up and knocked the Americans from the top rung of the pitcher chug ladder. From that point forward, they felt like a completely different team. They continued that chugging advantage in beer ball, where they claimed a silver medal.

What Went Wrong

The Canadians failed to capitalize on a semifinal trip in beer pong and after a great first round run in the obstacle course, did not grab the final point that could have moved them from overall bronze to silver.

Scotland (Miller/Steffes) – 4th – 7 points (1G, 1S, 2B)

What Went Right

Scotland took gold in bounce run and a bronze in pitcher chug to claim the overnight lead. A silver in snappa gave them the lead at the half way point of the Olympics.

What Went Wrong

The overnight leader curse continues. It really looked for a long time like Scotland was the favorite and then in an instant, it was over. With only 1 point in second half of the Olympics, the Scots fizzled.

Ivory Coast (Rivera/Tevik) – 5th – 7 points (3S, 1B)

What Went Right

Chugs excluded, the Ivory Coast was by far the most complete team in this year’s Olympics, having some success in nearly every event. A big head-to-head shoot off win in quarters was clutch.

What Went Wrong

An upset loss to Fiji in beer pong wasted their #1 bracket seed in an event eventually medaled by three teams near the bottom of the final standings. Bubbles in snappa and beer run left points on the board.

United States (Elrey/Jones) – 6th – 6 points (2S, 2B)

What Went Right

he Americans medaled 4 events, showing they are still a threat in a wide array of games. They won their pool in the obstacle course, bringing back memories of their 2018 OC win that sealed the Olympics.

What Went Wrong

Where did our chugging champs go? Two straight years of silver in the pitcher chug but maybe more importantly 0 points in beer ball which used to be one of their specialties.

Hong Kong (Saldivar/Wolf) – 7th – 5 points (1G, 2B)

What Went Right

Hong Kong fought back twice in redemption to win beer pong in double overtime.

What Went Wrong

Hong Kong missed medal in pitcher and straw chug by an average of 5 seconds each. They bubbled beer ball and managed only bronze in the other shooting event, beer run.

France (LePage/ LePage) – 8th – 2 points (1S) – 20.3 beers

What Went Right

A last-second medal in the obstacle course kept the Frenchmen from an empty Olympics. They finished 2-0 in scheduled games for bounce run and claimed the #1 seed.

What Went Wrong

France finished 1-6 in bracket play, never reaching the semifinals. As the Olympic record holder in quarters with 19 in 2017, they managed only 4 this year, finishing last.

Jamaica (Dragoslovich/Williams) – 9th – 2 points (1S) – 24.9 beers

What Went Right

This year celebrated that the Jamaican flag will never be flown by anyone other than Dragoslovich and Williams. Also, they finished second in beer pong.

What Went Wrong

Jamaica bubbled bounce run and lost a tough championship match in beer pong.

Fiji (Carouso/Iobst) – 10th – 1 point (1B)

What Went Right

A Cinderella run in beer pong got Fiji a bronze medal they can be proud of.

What Went Wrong

Inexperience for the double-rookie team hurt their ability to contend. But the same could be said about Lichtenstein (now Canada) last year. Maybe Fiji will be next year’s surprise team.

Djibouti (Austin/Sullivan) – 11th – 0 points

What Went Right

Djibouti came close in quarters, finishing with 11, good enough for the bubble.

What Went Wrong

The Djiboutians were 0-12 in their scheduled games and advanced only twice in bracket play.
